I read about this tradition a few years ago in my local newspaper and tried it. I've done it every year for about 3 years now and love to see the waitresses' reaction!
On Christmas Eve (or another night during the week of Christmas) we go out to look at all the Christmas lights around our neighborhood. All of the oooing and awwwing creates quite an appetite, so we stop at Sonic for a quick refreshment. When the waitress brings us our order, we give her a generous $20 tip and wish her a 'Merry Christmas'! One year this made the waitress cry and she told me she still had toys in lay-a-way at a store for her children. She wasn't sure how she would pay for the remainder of her bill. It made me feel so good to know that I had helped in some small way. And, I love the thought of helping someone who is willing to work on Christmas Eve!

What a great thing to do!!
Oh my goodness, Amy. How sweet!!! I love this idea.
I love this!
Amy~
I read this post to my mom and you completely inspired us. Last week I was working in San Antonio. My mom and I ran to a sporting goods store to purchase my brother-in-law some Christmas gifts. A very sweet lady helped us~ she told us she her husband just left her. She has two kids and works two jobs. She said she wouldn't get anything this year for Christmas. My mom and I were amazed at how positive she was about everything.
After leaving the sporting goods store, my mom and I stopped at Bath and Body Works. We just kept thinking about the sweet lady at the sporting goods store and how she wouldn't get anything this year for Christmas. We bought her a gift set and brought it back to her. We told her she was so sweet and helped us so much so we wanted to give her a little something to thank her.
Thanks for sharing your story and inspiring us to do something nice for someone else this Christmas season!
Love,
Jill
